What we expect at L5

Expectations for Principal Designer
Scope The design of KODE's products as a whole, including new products and major redesigns, often as the sole designer alongside one or more engineers.
Independence and judgment Sets scope and manages even the most complex projects without oversight. If they see something to improve, they do it without waiting to be asked.
Design and writing Makes major contributions to the look and feel of our products, invents new product designs, and extends and improves the design system, our principles and our house style. Writing is exceptional.
Technical skills Works comfortably at any level of the stack and discusses complex application logic with engineers. Introduces new tools and systems to the team.
AI-assisted delivery Defines how AI changes the way KODE designs, and keeps that aligned with our security and compliance commitments.
Quality and review Defines design standards and guidance, and shows them in their own work. Sought out across the company for critical work and decisions.
Communication and influence A leader at the company, in craft and in culture, who contributes across teams. Leads product announcements internally and publicly, and represents KODE outside the company through talks and published writing. Direct reports are not required.

At every level

Every designer's work gets reviewed, whatever their level, and leading a project is an assignment, not a promotion. Read more on the design overview.
